Dark Sky Reserve Map

The central idaho dark sky reserve (cidsr) is located in central idaho and encompasses the cities of sun valley, ketchum, and stanley. Measurements have shown the sky to be exceptionally dark right across the region, with readings above 21.9 common. Many plants, wildlife and insects rely on darkness to forage, breed and navigate so protecting the dark sky not only provides a magical experience for you, but it also protects ecosystems.

Various local authorities have suggested others, and we've added some of our favourite spots too. Within this reserve is new zealand’s premier astronomical research centre, the mount. It is the largest one of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and one of only eight in the world.

The reserve, which is located in central idaho, occupies an area of about 1,400 square miles.

Most of these sites are dark sky discovery sites, places officially recognised as excellent locations for stargazing. At these sites, the seven main stars in the winter constellation orion are visible to the naked eye.
